How many times have you traveled on I-89 North watching the pine forests, mountains and wetlands zoom by at 75 miles per hour? Behind that beautiful New Hampshire scenery lays a treasury of places and roads in the Dartmouth/Lake Sunapee region.
Join the SEC and other fellow scenic driving enthusiasts for this year's Back Roads Rally. For over 14 years now, this (almost) annual event always promises to put the participants on some of the most scenic, fun (and often lesser known) back roads that New Hampshire and our neighboring states have to offer.
The Back Roads Rally this year will be a non-competitive road rally that will, in keeping with tradition, feature many interesting sites to stop at along the way, sites that are connected by some fantastic driving roads you're sure to enjoy.
The driving route will start in Concord, New Hampshire, at Panera Bread. Grab a pastry and coffee while you read the directions and determine which sites you might want to linger at based on your interests, time and weather. Be sure to bring a cooler; you will certainly want to fill it along the way with fresh produce, meats and baked goods as the route will take you to several working farms, homesteads and estates. Stop and watch the grapes grow while you sample the finished product and perhaps bring a bottle or two home.
Cruise through the main street of a small town where early 19th century horses & buggies would still feel at home. Travel the valley road between Mt. Assurance & Mascoma Lake to the Enfield Shaker Museum. You’ll want to allow a couple hours if you intend to tour it; there's an extra cost for full access. Continue the scenic drive toward Lake Sunapee where you must see the huge three-story horse barn full of furniture for sale. Bring along a picnic lunch or buy food to enjoy at Lake Sunapee harbor, ski area or beach. We will end our journey together just South of New London at the Flying Goose Brew Pub. Hope you'll be able to stay a bit for the post rally gathering which starts at 4:00, to toast your successful route navigating and to share your exploits with your fellow rallyers.
So mark your calendars, and hope for a "top-down" day (even if you have a hardtop) because the event will run rain or shine. You can go at your own pace, and stop where and when you want. All the scenic locations are easily accessible (no four wheelin' required). This will be "post card New Hampshire", so don't forget your camera. Hope to see you there!
